Savory Italian Sausage Roll

Prepare Country White Bread Mix:

  • Bread Mix
  • Yeast Packet (included)
  • 1 cup warm water (110F)
  • 3 Tbsp melted butter

In a mixing bowl, whisk yeast, warm water and a spoonful of bread mix. Let mixture stand 5 minutes. Add remaining bread mix and melted butter.  Mix on low speed with dough hook until combined, then increase speed to medium for 5 minutes.  If mixing by hand, combine ingredients and knead dough for 10 minutes.  Shape dough in a ball.  Place in a lightly greased bowl covered with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes.

Sausage Filling:

  • 1 lb. Italian sausage (mild)
  • 1 small onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 can 6.5 oz. sliced mushrooms, chopped according to size preference
  • 1 Tbsp Italian seasoning
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese
  • 2 eggs, well beaten, divided

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  In a large skillet, cook sausage and onion until sausage is no longer pink.  Drain off fat.  Add garlic to skillet, cook for one minute, remove from heat.  Stir in mushrooms, seasonings, cheese and beaten eggs, reserving 1 egg mixture tbsp. for later.  

Roll dough into a 16″x12″ rectangle.  Spread the sausage mixture to within 1 inch of each edge.  Roll up like a jelly roll, firmly pinch seams together.  Place on a greased (or lined with parchment paper) baking sheet.  

Brush remaining beaten egg over the bread roll.  Bake until golden brown, about 25-30 minutes.  Remove from oven, let rest for 5 minutes.  Slice with a bread knife and serve warm.
